The Rabnott Suite

Towards the conclusion of WBro Lambert’s “History of The Lodge of Emulation No. 299” he mentions that the use of WBro Rabnott’s £30,000 bequest was yet to be decided. Now, and in accordance with his wishes, the result is being enjoyed by all the lodges using the Dartford Masonic Club in the form of a comfortable dining and function room which regularly echoes with the sounds of Brethren and their guests being happy and communicating happiness, a situation with which, I am sure, WBro Fred Rabnott would be very satisfied. The Rabnott Suite was officially opened by the ProvGM, VWBro Simon Francis Waley, on 25th August 1995, allowing for a capacity for 120 diners, and there were sufficient funds remaining for refurbishment of the porch area at the front of the building. Obviously, a new dining room required new chairs and tables, items in which WBro Jimmy Britton took a personal and protective interest — and thereby hangs an enduring tale. Some of our present members still remember the first occasion on which the lodge used the suite and recall that all went well until the time came to depart, with the Tyler’s customary refrain, “Happy have we met, happy may we part, and happy meet again” punctuated by the pounding on the tables by many glasses, bottles and other implements which was followed immediately by Jimmy’s admonishing cry of “Mind the tables!” His words had little lasting effect however for the practice and cry is still being carried on to this day, indeed it has been adopted by some other lodges and Jimmy’s admonition has even been heard in other Masonic Centres in the Province.
