The first number of our lodge was No. 535 which appears on the warrant but it is not mentioned in the minutes until the 11th meeting. The minutes give the date of the meeting but there is rarely an indication of day or time.
Candidates are usually only mentioned by first Christian names, surname and town of residence. No indication is given of age or trade and when we get two surnames the same it is difficult to establish relationships, although we do sometimes get senior and junior. Although candidates were proposed and balloted for in the manner of today, they did not automatically become members of the lodge. They had to be again proposed and balloted for as subscribing members.
Visitors were often just recorded as surnames. Initials, Christian names, lodge numbers and lodge names were bonuses. Often joining members were just as brief.
One other point is that the WM was addressed as “The Right Worshipful Master” which title today is reserved for the PGM.
Two stewards are mentioned for the first time at the third meeting and at the following meeting there is the first mention of a "Tiler". It was proposed that Mr Goodwin of Darenth "be made a mason gratis for the purpose of being Tiler” and he was initiated and passed that evening.
It is also obscure as to the duties of the PM for Joseph Harman, who was initiated at the first meeting, acted as PM at the fifth meeting at which he was also raised.
The first record of benevolence by the lodge was at the December meeting of 1793 when a grant of 10s 6d was made from lodge funds to a brother, "he being sick”.
On 8th April, 1796, at a meeting of the lodge at the "Marquis of Granby” a motion by the WM to continue meeting at the "Marquis of Granby” until after the Provincial Grand Lodge meeting was negatived, and the lodge was adjourned to the "Rose Inn” and there closed in due form.
