In 2015 the lodge suffered the loss of one of its longest serving and staunchest members, WBro James Henry Britton, PJGD, PProvDGReg, who passed away on Friday 6th February, aged 90, after living a full and active life. Jimmy, as he was affectionately known, had served in the RAF as a navigator and radio officer, continuing his flying career with BOAC. It was during this time that Jimmy was initiated into The Lodge of Emulation by WBro H. G. Apted in January 1953 and worked his way through the offices until being elected Master in 1970. In 1976 he took the office of Treasurer of the lodge and served in that capacity until 1995, at the same time regularly taking part in ceremonies, an activity in which he continued to participate until the final months of his life for Jimmy was an excellent ritualist and a strict guardian of the traditions of the lodge. In March 2013, WBro M. Estaugh, AProvGM, on behalf of the PGM, visited the lodge to congratulate WBro Britton on the remarkable achievement of attaining 60 years in Freemasonry. At about this time Jimmy was not well and his health rapidly declined until he was eventually admitted to Darenth Valley Hospital. In his final days Jimmy’s pain was thankfully eased by the use of a T34 Ambulatory Syringe Pump, a scarce and expensive resource. After WBro Jimmy Britton’s death the lodge made a donation of £200 towards his family’s appeal to buy a Syringe Pump for the hospital in his memory.
